Fr. J. Francis Stroud, S.J. passed away on Sat. June 29, 2008 at 6:00 pm.
He was taken to the hospital on Monday June 23 with high fever.
He was diagnosed as having pneumonia. For a couple of days he felt
and looked very tired and could hardly move. On Thursday he began to perk up,
on Friday he was beginning to laugh. Fr. Stroud was even able to dictate
the following newsletter. And even though it is after the fact it seemed
right that you get to see his almost last thoughts to you. On Saturday he
was sitting up on a chair in the morning and later that day he died.
Fr. Stroud’s last newsletter:
“There has been a set-back lately, taken to the hospital and developed pneumonia.
Because of the radiation therapy it is very difficult to resist the infection.
How long I will be in the hospital is undecided. However, the doctor was pleased
with the progress I am making. Maybe next week I can go back to Murray-Weigel.
I am so grateful for all your prayers and concerns.
When I am up and around I’ll be back in touch with you.”
Gloria Messemer
Assistant to Fr. Stroud, S.J.
JUNE NEWSLETTER
Once again, thank you for your prayers and support.
My recovery is progressing and I hope not too many months
will go by before I am fully restored.
If you have any questions, you can email them to
my assistant, Gloria. She will take care of it.
Fr. Stroud, S.J.
MAY NEWSLETTER
Thank you for being patient.
I am still in the Jesuit Infirmary (Murray-Weigel) at Fordham
and recovering from the cancer surgery on the neck.
I should be here for a few months more.
Thanks also for your prayers and good wishes.
We have a few plans for conferences when I am
back on my feet, but nothing firm yet.
You can still order books and tapes from the office.
Gloria Messemer, my assistant, will be able help you.
Blessings & Peace
Fr. J. Francis Stroud, S.J.
MARCH NEWSLETTER
The day before Thanksgiving I had a malignant tumor removed from my neck.
All went well. Then I had seven weeks of radiation.
That was very difficult. Now that the radiation is
finished I expect a good recovery.
My voice shall return fatigue should lessen;
sore throat and mouth shall cure.
Hopefully, I should write a happy Newsletter in April.
Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes.
Fr. Frank Stroud, S.J.
January & February Recovering
December 2007 NewsletterSince I last wrote in November I underwent a major
surgical operation to remove a malignant tumor on my neck.
The recovery has been progressing smoothly and
I will be staying in Fordham’s infirmary (Murray-Weigel Hall)
until I can function on my own. The expression of care,
concern and love have made this an extraordinary experience
for me and I am grateful to all of you for your many prayers.
When I am stronger, I will resume my newsletter with plans for next year.
In the mean time, please have a Blessed Christmas and a Joyful New Year.
You will all be in my prayers at that time.
NOVEMBER 2007 NEWSLETTER
Grand Coteau Louisiana will be hosting our
DeMello retreat from Nov. 1 to Nov.4. A good
sized group has been signed up since before September
so we will be expecting a fine group of people there.
Fr. Edmundo Rodriquez, S. J. who was once the
director of that retreat house, and also former Provincial of the
New Orleans province of the Jesuits, will be assisting us at this retreat.
Fr. Edmundo is now a pastor in Albuquerque, N. M.
For those of you who are interested in the early
history of the Jesuit order, I can’t recommend too
highly the twelve CD lectures by Fr. John O’Malley, S.J.
They are not only informative but quite inspiring.
I will listen to them for the second time shortly.
They are produced by the NOW MEDIA.
Since Thanksgiving will soon be upon us, I want to give
thanks to Our Lord, Jesus, and of course to His holy Mother
for all the blessings our Center has received over the years,
especially in having such good friends like you. Be assured
that you are always in my prayers.
Happy Thanksgiving
J. Francis Stroud, S.J.
OCTOBER 2007 NEWSLETTER
This is a bit late in coming but I returned from Italy just last week.
All is going well and I send my blessing to all of you who read this.
Our next DeMello retreat is scheduled for November 1 to 4 at
Grand Coteau, Louisiana. You can check the conference section of
the website for details and for contact information. A good number
have already signed up and requests are still coming in, so if you
are interested, please contact the site as soon as possible.
Fr. Edmundo Rodriquez, S.J. the former Provincial of the New Orleans
Province and former Director of that Retreat house will be assisting
on this retreat. I know you will enjoy meeting him and hearing him.
He is now a Pastor in Albuquerque, N.M. and has generously rearranged
his schedule of weddings and First Communions in order to be with us.
All the best to you until I write to you in November.
SEPTEMBER 2007 NEWSLETTERIn my last newsletter I promised that I would give a report
on the special conference we conducted in Ireland to celebrate
the 20th anniversary of Tony DeMello’s death in 1987.
To sum it up in just a few words, it was a resounding success.
Originally we thought of having the conference for the Irish people.
The reason for choosing Ireland as the venue for the conference is
because Fr. Myles O’Reilly, S.J. had arranged a conference in 1987
with 800 people signed up. Unfortunately, Tony DeMello died that
summer so he couldn’t fulfill that obligation. I wanted to do
something this year in Ireland to make up for that loss.
Our plans were transformed to honor the many benefactors and
supporters of the DeMello Spiritually Center. We brought fifty one
of these wonderful people to the renowned Adare Manor with the
help of its owner Tom Kane.
The conference was a combination of celebration and spirituality
which was extraordinary. Each day we had a gifted speaker speak to
the group and each one made a unique contribution. Fr. Tony D’Souza
came from India and gave the first talk. Pastor Clint Kemp cane
from the Bahamas and gave the second talk. Bill Harris, the director
of the Centerpointe Research Institute in Oregon not only gave a
fine presentation on his wonderful Holosync meditation technique,
but gave a three hour workshop the next day which our guests deeply
appreciated. The fourth talk was given by Fr. Dick McHugh, S.J .who
was the co-director of the Sadhana Institute with Tony in India.
His personal recollections of Tony were very moving. The final
presentation was a medley of excerpts from four television appearances
Tony did before he died. Jonathan Galente put this together
spending many hours of his precious time and our guests thoroughly
enjoyed his contribution.
There were a number of Jesuit priests attending. They offered Mass
each day for our participants and made a unique contribution which
was greatly appreciated.
The weather favored us making it possible to see the many excellent
sights of Ireland. So you can see why I called the conference a success.
The staff at Adare Manor was one other reason why our guests were eloquent
in their praise. Cheerful, kind and caring are understated words to describe
how well we were treated. If you ever go to Ireland, make the Adare Manor
near Limerick your place to stay. You will be delighted with it.
Our next DeMello conference is scheduled for Grand Coteau, LA
in November (Nov. 1 to 4). I will first make my own retreat in
South Jersey, and will be away in Europe till early October.
After that we get ready for the November conference.
Be assured of my prayers for all of you. Keep well and I will keep
you informed by this newsletter in October.
AUGUST 2007 NEWSLETTER
This Wednesday, August 1st, I leave for Ireland to get a
head start on our special conference in Adare.
The group of benefactors and supporters of the DeMello Center
will arrive on the 5th . The purpose is to celebrate the
20th anniversary of Tony’s death and to offer the group
a series of talks during the six nights they will be with us.
When I return home and in the next newsletter I will give you
a report on how it went.
Please keep well and have a blessed summer.
Although this newsletter is brief, it is filled with
affection and admiration for all of you.
JULY 2007 NEWSLETTER
All is going well for our program in Ireland in August (5-11).
As I mentioned in previous letters, this conference is closed
due to the special character of the event. I wish I could invite more,
but perhaps in the future, I will be able to run something like
it in Ireland for more people.
My prayers of gratitude to God are in abundance for the happy
return of my assistant, Gloria Messemer, from the hospital.
She is now back at her desk and working happily for all of us.
The next conference in Grand Coteau, LA is scheduled for November
(see “conferences”) and we look forward to it.
I will be doing a bit of traveling before then (to Europe, etc)
but I will be back in time for Grand Coteau.
Keep well, you are all in my prayers.
JUNE 2007 NEWSLETTER
I am back from our conference in Malibu, California (May 18-20).
Jonathan came and ably assisted me in the conference with his exercises.
As you know, I give the talks and Jonathan offers exercises to help
integrate the talks in to the lives of the participants.
I have always believed that the combination of the talks and the exercises have
led to the success of these conferences. Our next spirituality retreat/conference
is in Grand Coteau, Louisiana in November. For details and contact information,
please check our website (www.demello.org under conferences)
Jonathan, as usual, will be doing his part and you will find it most invigorating,
I assure you.
Our plans for the Ireland adventure is finally finalized. There are a few details
yet to work out, but I hope to have that all in place in a week or two.
As I mentioned in my last letter, I wish I could have more of my friends
involved in this special event celebrating Tony DeMello’s 20th anniversary of his death,
but I had to limit the numbers (close to 60) because of the great cost of this venture.
Our resources are modest, and I am straining the budget of the Center to the limit.
However, there will be more events of this kind in the years to come and you will be
the first to hear in this newsletter when the plans are made.
All best wishes for a happy and blessed summer. I will write again in July and again
in August to let you know how all went in Ireland.
May 2007 Newsletter
This Newsletter will cover April-May.
I have been catching up this month preparing for our conference
in Malibu and another in Ireland in August, 2007.
I am fully recovered from the surgery in
January-February and back to work.
Most of my time has been spent getting the logistics in order
for our trip to Ireland in August.
This conference wasn’t posted on our schedule since in was
designed for the benefactors and supporter of the Center
who have been so helpful over the years. As you know,
we don’t charge for our conferences even for the transportation
of the team. The Center depends on the free will contributions
of our friends to cover the costs of our work. When that help
ceases to come, we stop our work. So far, that hasn’t happened
and thank the Lord, we are still able to continue our work of
giving retreats, distributing books and other DeMello materials.
Once again, I thank you all for being so kind.
The conference in Ireland was made possible by the owner of
Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland, Tom Kane (former chairman
of the board of Trustees of Fordham University and good friend
over the years. Adare Manor is one of the best resorts in
Ireland (according to Conde Nast) so this has been an extraordinary gift.
We expect to have 53 guests, with five speakers who will speak
each evening for one hour for the five nights. I wish we could
have everyone attend, but the resources of the Center are modest.
Maybe in years to come!
One interesting side note, a pastor in the mid west who has
14,000 members of his congregation come each week
(he has 40,000 members on his website) told them all to buy
Fr. DeMello’s WAY TO LOVE! I read a chapter of that gem of
a book every night, and still marvel at the wisdom contained therein.
Keep well. I will resume the letter in June when I return
from the west coast.
March 2007 Newsletter
Fr. Stroud, the Director of the DeMello Spirituality Center, underwent carotid artery surgery
on January 31st. He is now almost 100% recovered and therefore is writing this March newsletter.
Keep your eyes peeled for a new company that has just been launched called Moka (an acronym
for Mobile Knowledge Assistant). The company was formed by two very brilliant young men
(who I liken to the new “Google” geniuses!) The company uses new technology to bring to you
important information, books, film and TV on a daily basis. You will be able to access much of
DeMello material simply by subscribing to their site. You will receive daily in small, easily
digestible bites, all this material on your cell phone, your computer, etc.
To contact them write diego@moka.com
I tell you about this company because not only are they using some of our DeMello books
as part of their offerings, but also because they donate a percentage of their profits to a
foundation to help educate disadvantaged children. Anyone who does things like that
deserve our support and encouragement.
Moka can be reached by typing in diego@moka.com on your computer,
or by contacting us at the Center.
A number of people have received videos and audiotapes of Tony DeMello, S.J. that are defective.
We have contacted the companies that produce these materials to see if this all too often
occurrence can be prevented. In the meanwhile, please accept our apologies and continue
to inform us of any problems. We will address those problems and satisfy your needs as
best we can. Our office staff is very small, but we will do all we can. Please be patient with us.
Some news on conferences: The next conference we will offer will be in Malibu, California at
the Franciscan Serra Retreat Center. See our website for contact information.
Loyola Marymount University is sponsoring this weekend (May 18-20) and should be most enjoyable.
As you know, our Center does not charge either the participants or the host facility for the retreat/conference.
The Retreat House does, of course, have to charge for room accommodations and meals.
However, the costs involved for this glorious venue are minimal.
The conference in Ireland is completely closed. It is a special conference in August for the benefactors
and supporters who make it possible for us to offer our spirituality conferences free of charge.
The number of guests has risen to 57. Arrangements have already been made. However, we do
plan to have other conferences in Ireland next year, so if you are interested,
let us know and we will keep you informed.
The final conference of the year will be in November, in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. The details are
posted on this website. Just click on “Conferences”.
I will be out of the country helping in a parish for Easter. If I don’t get a newsletter off to you before I
leave April 2nd, let me wish you now every Easter blessing.
February 2007 Newsletter
Since my last newsletter, I have been slowed down by a medical
intervention which bought me into a hospital and surgery in January.
All is well now, and the recovery is coming along fine.
Forgive the lateness of this letter.
We are looking to a few more spirituality conferences in the months ahead,
but the one that has been finalized is the one in Malibu, California in May.
Check out the “conferences” section of this newsletter for the details.

January, 2007 Newsletter
Since I will be away till January 19th, I am writing this letter before
I leave NYC on Dec. 19th so that you will have it in early January.
When you see this you will already be in the new year of 2007.
My hopes and prayers are that you had a very blessed Christmas
and New Year. My prayers are with you daily.
The next DeMello spirituality retreat or conference will be in Malibu, CA
in May. It has been posted on our website under conferences.
Another will be in November in Grand Coteau, LA.
In my February newsletter, I hope to give you an update on how our
Center has been able to help some of our NY Province apostolates.
When I return from my travels, I will have more information on this.
I am very hopeful that God will bless our endeavors in this regard.
In the meantime, be assured of our continued best wishes for a
wonderful New Year. You are all in our hearts and prayers
DECEMBER 2006 NEWSLETTER
I was just reading the section called “Articles” on our website.
Those articles are a gold mine. If you have a moment,
do yourself a favor and read any one of them, you will be delighted!
In past newsletters, I mentioned that we are having a special “DeMello Event”
in Ireland this August, 2007. The conference is closed because the numbers
are all filled up, but I will give you an account of it when it is over.
The reason for this special conference is because we are celebrating the
20th anniversary of Fr. Tony DeMello’s death. The guests are more than
fifty benefactors and supporters of the DeMello Center. It is the least we
can do for so many people who have made our work possible.
Because of them we are able to offer spirituality retreats and conferences
free of charge. The Center does not charge either the retreat houses or the
participants for these conferences, not even the transportation costs of the presenters.
This would not be possible were it not for the generous free contributions of our benefactors.
Their only reward is the blessings they receive from God and the knowledge that their
support has helped scores of people all over the globe. May God continue to bless them all!
Christmas will soon be upon us. And I cannot tell you how many blessings have come
our way this past year. In New York, the Jesuit Province has some extraordinary
works (apostolates). The DeMello Center has been able to support some of them.
When this support has come to fruition, I will be able to share with you the details.
In the meanwhile, please keep this work in your prayers. Your prayers will bring a
delightful conclusion to this enterprise.
I am sending this out before Thanksgiving so you can be assured that you
are all in my prayers and Masses for a Happy Thanksgiving
NOVEMBER 2006 NEWSLETTER
All is well so far. Thanksgiving this month will be special because we
have so much to be grateful for. As Tony DeMello said so often,
“You cannot be truly grateful and unhappy at the same time.”
For this reason, I always take time at the end of the day to thank
God for “everything” that has happened during that day.
The good things bring us joy, but the difficult things bring us growth.
That is why I make sure that no day passes without a word of thanks
to God for all that has occurred during that day. When I am asked why
I seem so happy (I say “seem” because there are times when I do
experience moments of sadness – believe it or not!) I attribute
it without a doubt to that wonderful practice I have incorporated
in my life of thanking God every day for everything.
If you are interested in knowing how you fit into all of this, I can
tell you very humbly and honestly that I thank God every day for you.
Your goodness, your kindness, your loyalty make my life complete,
so fulfilled, so completely worthwhile. How can I not be happy when
I have such good friends like you.
Recently, the DeMello Spirituality Center held it annual Board of Trustees meeting.
What a fine group of men. Three Jesuits, Fr. Joe Parkes, S.J., Fr. Leo Daly,
S.J. and myself, three laymen, Jonathan Galente, Paul Becker, and Desmond Towey.
On our board of advisors, Mike Keefe, was also there. Fr. Tom O’Connor, S.J.
who has been our treasurer passed away this year, so the board appointed
Des Towey to replace him in that position. The board also invited Fr. Daly to
replace Tom as a member of the Trustee Board. Each member contributes
his time and expertise to the Center and for this I am extremely grateful.
So the work of the Center goes on and because of the many blessings and
graces bestowed on it from God, the work continues to be successful.
OCTOBER 2006 NEWSLETTER
This newsletter is a bit late since I am traveling but here it is.
The spirituality in Nassau in October was wonderful. We had about
fifty participants and they seemed to have enjoyed it and found it
profitable (according to their evaluations). Same for the one in
Stella Maris in Elberon in September.
God seems to want us to continue His work. Even though we have
eliminated costs for the retreats/conferences, the free will
contributions still keep coming, so that must be a divine sign!
In future newsletters I will keep you informed of what’s happening.
SEPTEMBER 2006 NEWSLETTER
By the time you see this newsletter, we will be in the midst of our
spirituality retreat in Elberon, NJ at Stella Maris retreat house.
We are pleased to report that this retreat has been filled for
several months with guests coming from as far away as Europe.
Our next DeMello retreat promises to be very interesting.
The venue is in Nassau, Bahamas, at the NPCC
(New Providence Community Center).
The dates are October 6 to 8, 2006. The majority of participants
will be from Nassau itself, but twelve (at least) will be coming
from the USA. These guests will be staying at the Orange Hill Inn.
The proprietors have given us a special rate for room and board.
Some will be staying at the Breezes resort as guests of Mr. John Issa,
the owner. Thank you, John, for such a generous gift.
As you know, the DeMello Center does not charge the participants
for the retreat itself. If it were not for the kind contributions of our benefactors,
we would be unable to offer these conferences/retreats. We are truly blessed.
In 1985, Tony DeMello, S.J. gave a conference in Rockville Center, NY.
Msgr. Tom Hartman showed this conference on his television program (Telicare).
Our plan is to make a DVD of this retreat/conference, and make it available
to those interested. It is 17 minutes long (edited by Msgr. Hartman from the
hour long program original). It is excellent. When it is ready for distribution,
I will announce it in this newsletter.
We are also planning a few more conferences here in the USA and in Europe.
When they are finalized, I will also bring them to your attention in this newsletter.
The October newsletter will come out shortly after I return from Europe at the
end of September. All God’s blessings on you and your loved ones.
AUGUST 2006 NEWSLETTER
The DeMello conference/retreat scheduled for August 25-27-06
at Stella Maris in Elberon NJ has been filled for months now and
we are looking forward very much to doing it. Some participants
are even coming from Europe!
The conference in Nassau, Bahamas is also quite filled.
A good number of guests are coming from the USA, but most
will be coming from Nassau itself. We expect about 80 participants.
I have just discovered some amazing videos that we made with
Tony in 1985 in Rockville Center, NY. I am going to put them on
DVDs and when I complete that task, I will post them on the website.
I truly forgot how wonderful they are and feel I must make them available
to our friends.
Newsletters shouldn’t be all business. Sometimes a personal note is appropriate.
And I would like to add one now. I received a message today from a woman in
Georgia who wrote so beautifully about the impact Tony DeMello’s work has
had on her life. In my grateful reply, I told her how pleased I was that her life was
so much helped by Tony’s approach to spirituality. I also told her that I have
received numberless letters from people literally around the globe telling me
of similar experiences. I am humbled by the fact that God has allowed me to
be part of so wondrous an enterprise. When the Pope saw the constitutions
of the Jesuit order that St. Ignatius the founder of the Society of Jesus –
(whose feast day we Jesuits celebrate on July 31st) had given him,
he said “Digitus Dei est hic” (the finger of God is here). I have no doubt
that God’s hand is at work here when I see the incredible impact Fr. DeMello’s
work has had on the lives of so many. Tony died almost 20 years ago,
at the age of 56. We all mourned the fate of such a good person dying so young.
But even death could not prevent God from furthering Tony’s apostolate.
Tony knew he was doing God’s work, although he never thought of himself as
someone pious or religious. He would turn over in his grave if he ever heard any
of us refer to him as a saint. He always said, “A saint is a saint till he knows it!”
Nevertheless his work is quite saintly. And I am blessed to be associated with it.
My able assistant, Gloria Messemer, will be minding the store while I am away on
conferences and other works outside the USA, so if you need anything, she will be
in the office at least once a week to help. She just returned from a serious hospital stay,
but we are blessed to have her back with us. She faithfully reads your e-mails
(stroud@fordham.edu) and listens to your phone calls, 718 817 4508.
So don’t hesitate to get in touch.
JULY 2006 NEWSLETTER
The spirituality conference in Malibu (June) was quite successful.
The Serra Franciscan Retreat house is beautifully situated overlooking
the Pacific Ocean in Malibu. Mel Gibson, Dick Van Dyke and others
live right there, but couldn’t make the conference. If they did,
you might have seen a film arising from it! Loyola Marymount U.
sponsored the retreat (full house). One of the Jesuit s on the faculty,
Fr. Bill Fulco, helped Mel Gibson on his film, “The Passion of Christ”.
He did the Aramaic and Latin translations for him.
Our next conference (August, 2006) will be at the Stella Maris retreat
house over looking the Atlantic ocean You might think I have an affinity
for oceans (actually I do) but it is just coincidental. The retreat is fully booked,
but don’t be discouraged, there will be others.
The conference in Nassau, Bahamas is heating up. If you would be interested
in coming to that one in October, you can contact me at stroud@fordham.edu
or telephone my assistant, Gloria Messemer, at 718 817 4508.
You will be guests of the DeMello Center for the conference itself.
Your accommodations at the Orange Hill Resort Spa and airfare would be your own.
We have a special rate at the Spa for rooms ($85 a night as opposed to the regular
rate of $120 a night) but I will have to book them for you to get that rate.
Time is of the essence, of course, so you would have to contact Gloria soon.
In July I leave for Limerick Ireland to finalize our arrangements for our special
DeMello event there in August 2007. This conference is closed already,
but if enough people write me and show interest, I might be able to make
further arrangements. Even with special air fare rates and discount rates
for six nights at the exclusive Adare Manor, it still is a rather expensive venture,
but if you are interested, write or telephone. Keep an eye on this newsletter for
further developments on this anniversary celebration (Tony DeMello’s 20th anniversary of his death).
MAY/JUNE NEWSLETTER 2006
Inasmuch as I will be traveling for much of June and July,
I thought it would be helpful if I combined two months new letters in one.
Our next DeMello conference/retreat will be held in
Malibu, CA on June 2nd to 4, 2006. The retreat house is
completely filled up, but if you are interested in coming,
you can contact them by phone to see if there is any room available.
The conference in August at Stella Maris in Elberon, NJ is also
almost completely filled, but again, if you are interested, you might try to call.
The contact numbers are on our website under “conferences”.
The conference in Nassau, Bahamas is still available to those in
the USA who want to attend. If you are interested in this one,
please contact Gloria Messemer at 718 817 4508.
There will be no charge for the conference itself, but you will have
to buy your air tickets, and for your room and board at the
Breezes hotel in Cable beach, Nassau. I don’t know what
the cost of that will be, but Mr. Issa, the owner of these
resorts in the Caribbean has promised me a special low rate.
I have to reserve those rooms rather soon, so if you wish to
take advantage of this opportunity, please contact Gloria Messemer
as soon as possible. I just finished writing Mr. Issa, the owner of the Breezes,
and told him I would be writing soon with the final numbers.
The dates for the conference are Friday, October 6th till Sunday, October 8th.
I am reserving rooms from Thursday, the 5th till departure on Monday the 9th.
The Breezes is a beautiful resort which you will enjoy. If you make a long weekend
of it, you will come home refreshed both spiritually and physically!
If you want me to reserve a room for you, please let me know as soon as possible.
This is imperative since the resort needs to know a long time in advance.
APRIL 2006 NEWSLETTR
I will be away till the end of March, so this letter is a bit early.
All is going well. Preparations are underway for our conferences
in June, August, and October. When I return, I will bring you up
to date on all the details.
MARCH NEWSLETTER 2006
We are still in the process of planning the DeMello
event for 2007 in Ireland. When more information is available,
it will be posted on this site. Progress is being made,
but the details are yet to be ironed out.
If you are a Retreat House director or have a facility
where you would like to host a DeMello Spirituality retreat
or conference, write to this site or email me at stroud@fordham.edu
and we will send you materials to enable you to plan such an event.
As you know from our newsletter www.demellow.org , our Center
does not charge the host facility for the conference or for travel
expenses for the team.
A very dear friend of the Center and a close personal friend of
mine for more that 40 years, Patrick Tierney in England, is in
serious condition in the hospital. I have been praying for a miracle
of recovery. He has improved somewhat which is an answer to our prayers,
but I ask you to please continue your prayers for him.
The power of your prayers is inestimable. I will keep you posted as to his health.
Thank you so very much. I have to rush to England to be with
Pat and his wife Sheila, so I will finish this newsletter tonight so you will
have it at the beginning of March. I should return by early March but if
you have some urgent matter and need to contact me, please leave a
message on my home phone 718 817 5378 and I will access those
messages from England and try to get back to you as soon as possible.
The conference in Elberon, NJ (Stella Maris Retreat house on the ocean)
scheduled for August 2006 was somehow omitted on the conference schedule.
That has been corrected so you will see it now on our site. Click on “conferences”.
The March “Thought of the Month” will also be posted on this site when you read this.
I would appreciate any feedback you might give me on this item.
Be assured that you are remembered in my daily prayers.
FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER 2006
By mistake, the January newsletter did not get posted till late
January, so this February letter is coming to you on time.
All went well in December and early January plus a few
unexpected wonderful surprises. As I told you in previous
letters, there is a new emerging Protestantism happening
throughout the globe. It is very ecumenical with a world
wide vision. One fine example of this is
Pastor Clint Kemp’s ministry in Nassau, Bahamas.
His approach to spreading Christianity is through the Arts
(painting, sculpture), Music, Gardening, teaching his flock
to find God in the world around them. His youth program is
considered one of the best in the country. I have just introduced
him to Dr. Denise Herzing, PhD’s “Wild Dolphin Project” which
you can be certain he will soon integrate into his ministry.
If you are interested in knowing more about this project,
look up www.wilddolphinproject.org Denise is a wonder.
You will find this project fascinating. Her studies are
concentrated on communication between dolphins themselves
and dolphins with humans. She has been working with dolphins
for more than fifteen years in the Caribbean waters off the
Grand Bahamas Island. She knows them even by name
and they know her. One even presented her with a calf
she gave birth to while Denise was away. Believe me; you will love it,
especially if you are a person of the sea!
We are still working on the DeMello event to celebrate
Tony DeMello’s 20th anniversary of his death.
The plan is to have this event in Ireland. It will be an “event”
rather than a conference. I would like to have guest speakers
in the evening, while during the day enjoying beautiful Ireland.
If you have any suggestions on how to make this event more
enjoyable and profitable, I am open to them. When more
information is available, I will post it on this site.
Keep well, see you here in March.
JANUARY NEWSLETTER 2006
I am writing this newsletter a bit early since I will be away for most of
December and half of January. By the time you read this, Christmas will have passed,
and I pray that you experienced a very blessed time. I am on my way to Nassau in the
Bahamas with my faithful and expert team to conduct a DeMello Spirituality
Conference for three days at the New Providence Community Center,
a wonderful facility run by Pastor Clint Kemp.
He has asked me to give his people an experience of Tony DeMello’s
approach to spirituality, since it has had such a positive impact on his
own life and ministry. We are delighted to oblige. As I have mentioned
before, there is a new emerging Protestantism which is very ecumenical.
Last month Pastor Clint had a meeting (called “La Mesa” an informal,
non-agenda gathering) of 24 pastors from Africa, Argentina, Chile, Brazil,
the Caribbean, and from many states in the USA. I was the one Catholic
representative. They are young, energetic, enthusiastic men and women
with a global vision. I was reminded of the vision St. Ignatius
(founder of the Jesuit order) had when he began his work in the 16th Century.
The spirit of God is certainly present and at work here. I am honored to be a
welcome part to help in this work.
For the past seventeen years, it has been my pleasure to offer Mass at
Christmas and Easter for the wonderful Catholic community of
St. Paul’s Church in Lyford Cay in Nassau. I hope to continue this
ministry as long as I am able and am invited. After this, I have a few
other meetings to attend to, and should be back in New York January 17, 2006.
If you wish to contact me at that time, my good assistant will be in the office
each Monday and will review any e-mail messages you may send. If there
is a matter of urgency and you need to contact me immediately, you can
call my private number 718 817 5378 which I will access frequently and try
to answer as soon as possible.
So until then, be assured you are all in my prayers for a blessed New Year,
and I will appreciate a prayerful remembrance from you. Our work is God’s work,
and it will succeed because of your wonderful prayers.
I would like to thank at this times those who have made contributions to our
Center (legal title: Center for Spiritual Exchange). As you are aware, these
contributions are tax-deductible. Since we no longer charge any fees even
travel expenses for the team, these contributions make it possible for us to
offer these spiritual retreats and conferences. We are very grateful to you.
It is also our policy not to ask for financial assistance, so those free will
contributions keep us in business. That is why we are so grateful.
Thank you again.
DECEMBER NEWSLETTER
As I said in my November newsletter, the DeMello conference scheduled
for Grand Coteau, Louisiana November 3 to 6 would still be held as
planned despite the ravages of Katrina. Happily, I am able to report
that we held the conference and the results
(according to our evaluation sheets) was most gratifying.
I am still amazed at the impact that spirituality has on
the lives of our participants.
Following the retreat (or conference), I flew down to Nassau,
Bahamas to attend a meeting of pastors from far and wide to discuss
implementation of spirituality in their parishes. The pastors of
Protestant churches came from Africa, South America
(Brazil, Chile, Argentina), from all over the USA, and the Caribbean.
There is a new emerging Protestantism which is more ecumenical than
“protesting” happening all over the world, and these pastors are young
(most in their forties and fifties), energetic, and enthusiastic.
It was a grace filled time and I feel certain that when more Catholic
theologians and thinkers join in these meetings God will bless them
all with even more Graces than they are filled with now. If the
DeMello Spirituality Center can make a contribution, it will be
along these lines – bring more Catholic thinkers to these
welcoming groups. The Spirit of God is at work here just as it was
when St. Ignatius was founding the Jesuit order. The words the Pope
used in those days “digitus Dei est hic” (the finger of God is here)
can easily be applied here. Pope John Paul II expended so much of
his energy reaching out to non-Christians (Muslims, Jews) and
non-Catholic Christians. This spirit of ecumenism is very much
alive in the work of these wonderful pastors.
In December, the DeMello Spirituality Center will be conducting
a three day retreat in Nassau in the facility of Pastor Clint Kemp’s
New Providence Community Church. A number of friends from the USA
will be in attendance. The details of this conference can be seen
on our website (under “conferences”). If you would like to attend
one of our retreats or conferences, there are two more scheduled in
Malibu, CA in June and in Elberon, NJ in August.
They are posted in this website.
The January newsletter may be delayed till the end of that month,
since I will be traveling until mid-January.
I trust you all had a Happy Thanksgiving and if you were traveling,
that you avoided all the traffic jams!
The conference in December in Nassau, Bahamas is fully booked.
But there will be more down there, I can assure you.. We are
looking forward to a fine three day conference. Jonathan Galente
has developed some new exercises of “awareness” which I found to
be very interesting and enjoyable. We hope to try them out in Nassau.
Christmas and New Years will soon be upon us. Let me take this
opportunity to assure you that you will all be remembered in my
Masses and prayers. A blessing on you and your families.
This coming year will bring you many gifts of Grace from the good Lord,
so look forward to it.
See you again in January.
NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER
During the month of November I will be traveling quite a bit.
Despite the devastation caused by Katrina,
the state of Louisiana is recovering.
Happily for us, plans for the DeMello Spirituality Conference
scheduled for November 3 to 6 is going forward.
If you would like to sign up just go to our web site
“conferences”
(since you are reading this, you are already on our web page)
and contact Fr. Warren Broussard. You may recall from my previous
newsletters, the DeMello Spirituality Center is not charging either
the participants or the Host House for the conference.
The room and board is a matter settled between the participants
and the Host retreat house.
Following the Grand Coteau I am going to a meeting in Nassau,
Bahamas, hosted by Pastor Clint Kemp of the New Providence
Community Church. He has invited Pastors from Brazil, Michigan,
Arizona and elsewhere to discuss implementing DeMello’s approach
to Spirituality in their parishes. It is wonderful to see the
impact Fr. DeMello has had on so many people, Catholic, Christian,
and non-Christian. I receive so many messages about how his message
of “awareness” has touched the lives of those on a spiritual path.
I received a call the other day from Bob Hurteau who is the contact
person at LMU in Los Angeles for our conference scheduled for
June 2-4, 2006
(for information on that conference in Malibu click on Conferences in our web site).
Bob tells me that all is in readiness for that conference. Bob,
among others sponsoring our DeMello spirituality conferences,
was delighted (and amazed) that our new policy of not charging either
the participants or the host sponsor is in effect. You can read all
about this policy in my October newsletter. The sponsors wonder how
we can do this without our Center going bankrupt. When you come to the conference,
it will be explained more fully. Briefly, it is not that the DeMello Center
has won the lottery, nor has the Center come into a financial windfall.
Simply put, our work is an apostolate, not a business. We will
depend only on free will tax exempt contributions. If that doesn’t work,
we will simply go out of existence. I am convinced that when you are doing
God’s work and doing it generously, people will see to it that the work continues.
I have no doubt about this. People are so generous. This work will continue,
you can be sure of it.
I just returned from the funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral of
my dear friend Wellington T. Mara, the owner of the NY Giants Football team.
Well was such a “Giant” of a man, so deeply spiritual, so loyal,
so devoted to family and friends. To see all those wonderful
Giants football players, coaches, family, friends and admirers at the
Mass paying their respect to a man who was loved by so many made my
heart swell with pride. I can’t remember seeing eight pages of a NY
paper paying such marvelous tribute to one man without a negative word about him.
My own friendship with Well spans fifty years, and I could add story after
story attesting to the great qualities attributed to him by Cardinal Egan
in his homily, by Frank Gifford and John Mara in their eulogies at the end
of the Mass. Well was a shining example of a truly spiritual person who
loved his God, his family, and his friends, not to mention his extended family,
the Giants team, old and new. We will all miss him greatly.
OCTOBER NEWSLETTER
If you have been looking at our website these past months,
you have seen the picture of my book on the spirituality
of Anthony DeMello, “Praying Naked” and the announcement
that it will soon be published. Well, it has arrived! Bantam,
Doubleday and Dell has produced an attractive cover
and an excellent printing of the manuscript.
The title understandably raised a few eyebrows
for a book on spirituality, but it all becomes
clear in the Introduction of the book.
After you have read the book, you may wish to
make inquiries or even offer your own reflections.
You can be sure I will read them with great interest
and care, and if possible even reply to some of them.
At any rate, although the book may not win a Pulitzer prize,
it is a deeply honest portrayal of my affection for Tony and
an appreciation of the great good he accomplished not only
in my own life, but in the lives of thousands of others.
When Tony was alive, I accompanied him on practically all
of his spirituality conferences and listened to him speak
over and over again. I never tired of hearing him. So when
I was asked to share his spiritual approach, I had much to
draw upon. I knew I could never walk in his shoes, so I
expanded the conferences to include the exercises of his
closest friend and collaborator Fr. Dick McHugh, S.J.
For twelve years Dick enriched these conferences with
his contributions and expertise in the field of psychology.
Dick decided after traveling with me half way around the
globe to continue his work in neuro- linguistic programming,
his doctoral specialty, back in India and elsewhere.
Jonathan Galente, a devoted friend and admirer of Tony,
stepped in for the next several years to offer the exercises.
Joan Budilovsky also joined the team and still travels with us
delightfully sharing her expertise in yoga at all the conferences.
It is from these experiences that the material contained in the
book is derived.
My hope is that you will enjoy reading what has been my honor
these past ten years to write.
Keep well and I will come back to you in my October Newsletter.

SEPTEMBER 2005
In as much as I will be away for all of September,
I will write this newsletter now and it will be posted in late August.
You may have seen a new item on our web site called
“THOUGHT OF THE MONTH”.
There are so many good thoughts out there that I thought it would
be worthwhile to post them to stimulate reflection. If something
strikes you as pertinent to your life why not send it along to
me on my personal e-mail (fstroud@cyburban.com). It may stimulate
me to reflect more!
The August THOUGHT OF THE MONTH has already been on the website.
The September THOUGHT will be published with this September newsletter.
The publishing date for the book PRAYNG NAKED which I have
written is now September 20th. It was originally scheduled
for an August release date, but the publishers felt a September
date was better. Visit our store
When I am in Europe in September, I will consult with my
European representatives regarding the “DeMello event”
we are planning in 2007 in Ireland. If anyone has any
suggestions regarding the format of this event, I am open to them.
Nothing has yet been written in stone, so we are very flexible.
However, a number of people have expressed interest in coming
to Ireland for this event. If you would like to join us, contact us.
Speaking of feedback, I want to thank those who have responded
to my idea of offering the DeMello conferences free of charge.
The possibility of the host house or Center being able to
charge a lesser fee for participants is very attractive.
If a participant feels he/she has profited by the experience
of the retreat, they are invited to make a free-will
donation to the DeMello Center. This may not be a wise
“business” decision, but after all, we are an apostolate,
not a business. The purpose of these retreats or
conferences is not to make money but to help people lead happier,
suffering-free lives. If the Center folds because of lack of funds,
then so be it. I remember on one occasion telling Tony DeMello
that we would use the resources of the Center to allow him to
offer his spirituality conferences to third world countries
free of charge. He was delighted. Unfortunately, he died before
we could implement those plans. It is in this spirit that we
will offer these conferences at no charge.
On our website is the addition of “PRINT LIST”
button/hotlink. Clink on this and you can print
out a complete list of all the DeMello materials.
If you haven’t seen the website “Sacred Space”, log on.
You will be delighted. It is run by an Irish Jesuit,
Fr. Gerry Bourke, S.J. and since its inception in 1999
it has been used by over 14 million people from more than
a hundred countries. If you wish to develop a daily practice
of prayer, try logging on to www.sacredspace.ie
I have used it myself and have found it most refreshing.
Keep well and I will come back to you in my October Newsletter.

AUGUST 2005
As I mentioned in my July news letter we are planning
a DeMello conference in Toronto next year.
When the details are completed,
you will find them on this website.
I also asked for feedback on my idea of offering the
conferences free.
I want to share with you some of the responses.
So far I haven’t received any responses.
When they come in, I will post them on the
September newsletter.
Since I will be away for most of September,
I will do the September newsletter early,
probably the third week of August.
The plans for the “DeMello event” in Ireland in 2007
are moving along. If you would like to share your
ideas with me on that also, I would be happy to hear
from you (fstroud@cyburban.com)
My reason for doing this event in Ireland
(and this has not yet been set in concrete)
is because when Tony was alive, we had arranged
to do a DeMello conference with him in Ireland
which was coordinated by Fr. Myles O’Reilly, S.J.
He had over 800 participants signed up,
so you can imagine how saddened Myles was when
Tony died just a month before he was to do that
conference. I have always wanted to do something
for Myles ever since, so that is why I was hoping
to do something in the Emerald Isle. We will see
how it works out. I have been in contact with Myles
and we will see what we are able to come up with.
I will keep you posted in this newsletter.
I have just heard from Fr. Dick McHugh, S.J.
He is in Ireland doing his NLP courses.
He will be joining us in ’07 for the “event”.
He returns to India and continues his work at
the Sadhana Institute which he ran with Tony when
he was alive. So, with Fr. Tony D’Souza, S.J. from India,
Jonathan Galente, Joan Bud, we should come up with
something interesting. Keep coming up with suggestions.
It should be a wonderful tribute to Tony.
Although I won’t be teaching my course “Spirituality,
Film and Television” next year from January to May
at LMU in Los Angeles, we will still be going west
to give that conference in Malibu which LMU is sponsoring.
More on that at a later date.
My own book on DeMello spirituality titled PRAYING NAKED
is expected to be out August 16th.
That is Doubleday’s target date.
(The title may seem unusual for a book on spirituality,
but it is explained in the introduction)
I have seen a review of it in Amazon.com by
Publishers Weekly. It is fairly good.
I say fairly since they misquote me in part.
I have written them a corrected version of the quote,
but I doubt if they will change it.
Still it is a positive review..
Blessings on you all and your families.
J. Francis Stroud, S.J.
July 2005
In June, we went to Los Angeles and set up the Demello retreat
at the Serra retreat house in Malibu for 2006. It will be sponsored
by LMU and the dates are June 2 to 4, 2006. The contact information
for reservations will be posted in the Conference section of this website.
As you know we had to postpone this year's conference in Malibu,
but Bob Hurteau of LMU assures me that all will be ready for 2006.
We travelled north to San Francisco and conducted a DeMello
retreat/conference at the Mercy Center in Burlingame, California.
Burlingame is the former home of Bing Crosby (his wife still lives there).
On one Sunday when all the Crosbys were at Mass (a requirement for
the young guests in the Crosby home) the boys saw Bing and his friends
leave the Church after Communion. So they decided to do the same.
When Bing saw them across the parking lot getting into their car,
he ran over and told them to get back into Church. "The Mass isn't over,"
he told them. They replied, "But you left!"
He answered, "We're going golfing! That's ok!" One of the boys told me this,so you know it is true!
The DeMello conference at the Mercy Center was wonderful. The feedback
I received from the evaluation sheets were the most encouraging I have seen.
Tony DeMello's approach to spirituality must be working since the response
was so positive.
Here is something I would like to hear from you about. I am thinking of
offering these conferences/retreats completely free of charge. How to
work out the details of such a move without bankrupting the DeMello Center,
I will work out later. Other great spiritual directors have done it and only
afterwards would allow participants to make free-will contributions to the
Center if they found they derived true spiritual help from their experience.
We don't make much on the retreat/conferences anyway (just enough to cover
expenses-and not even that at times) so why not go the whole way and offer
the conferences totally free. We will figure out a way to pay the room and
board, and if we go broke, that's ok too!
If you would like to share your thoughts with me concerning this idea,
e-mail me at my personal address, fstroud@cyburban.com and put in the
"subject" personal. That way, if your message is diverted to "junk"
by the spam filter, I will see it and retrieve it. It will be good to
have a dialog with so many of you DeMello fans.
While in Toronto, the sisters of St. John the Divine asked me to arrange
a conference there next year. Keep your eye on the conference schedule
for that. It is a beautiful place.
Besides the DeMello conference in the Bahamas this December (sign up early)
(if you are coming from USA contact Diane Cosgrove at Altour Travel for
plane reservations 800 227 1244 ext 235. She will be a great help) which
we are all looking forwarded to, plans are now being formulated for a special
"DeMello " event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Tony's death (1987)
in 2007. The plan, so far, is to do the event in Ireland. But more of this
in a future newsletter.
Blessings on you and your families.
J. Francis Stroud, S.J.
June 2005
Your director, (me) J. Francis Stroud S.J. is now in California.
The postponed conference in Malibu has now been set for June 2-4, 2006.
(See the News Conference Schedule).
I am now on my way to Burlingame to give the conference at the
Mercy Center (June 3-5, 2005)
If you would like to see what a beautiful place Mercy Center is
go to their website (http://www.mercy-center.org) be sure to include the hypen.
While I am in Los Angeles, I will discuss some proposed plans to offer
a workshop at the L.A. Religious Ed. Congress next February.
They generally have 30,000 people come to that congress.
They asked me to have Tony deMello, S.J. speak there in 1988,
but as you know, he died in 1987.
The publication date of my book on The Spirituality of
Tony deMello, S.J. is set for August 16th 2005, by DoubleDay.
The title of the book "Praying Naked" has the most interesting couple
explanations for the choice of the title in the introduction.
In December (8-11) 2005, we will be conducting a DeMello Spirituality
Conference in the Bahamas. The Pastor of the New Providence Community
Church (NPCC). Clint Kemp, made one of our conferences five years ago
and he repeatedly said the the DeMello approach to spirituality
has changed the direction of his ministry.
Recently, Pastor Kemp and two other Pastors came at our invitation
to Fordham University to meet with the Dean of our Graduate Program
of Religion & Religion Eduaction, Fr. Anothony Ciora. It was so
successful, that now a new collaboration between these pastors and
Fordham University has begun. We are pleased that this is in line
with Pope John Paul II's efforts to reach out to non-catholic and
non-christioan religions and which Pope Benedict XVI promises to continue.
Make your reservations early for this conference. Check the conference
schedule on this website for contact details.
If you would like to ask any personal questions & would like me to
reply to them (confidentally), send me an email at
FSTROUD@CYBURBAN.COM. For normal business affairs, use the office email.
The above is just for personal communications.
I will reply when I return home to New York.
MAY 2005
The DeMello Center arranged for Pastors of the
New Providence Community Church in Nassau,
Bahamas to meet with the Graduate Program of
Religion and Religious Education at Fordham
University to discuss dialog and collaboration.
Pope John Paul II opened many doors when he
reached out to non Catholic Religions.
This collaboration is in keeping with the
spirit of Vatican II and John Paul II’s
ecumenical reaching out.
We will keep you informed in these monthly
newsletters of the progress that will surely be made.
There is a new emerging Protestant Church coming
into being which promises great gifts of Grace
from on high for ecumenism. Read again my April
newsletter for the details on the Pastors from
the Protestant Churches visiting Fordham.
Just a reminder, the spirituality conferences are moving along.
The one in Malibu has been postponed till June of 2006.
When we have the exact dates, we will post them on the website.
The conference in Burlingame (near San Francisco)
at the Mercy Center is still in place and will be
wonderful for those who can make it. Simply
contact Donna Schaeffer at the number on the
site and she will give you all the details.
Her cell phone is 650 544 8659
Her e-mail address is: schaeffer@usfca.edu
The conference in Grand Coteau, Louisiana in November
is also in place. See the website for contact information.
Grand Coteau is a grand! place to be in November.
The one in the Bahamas in December should be a delight.
It will also be an opportunity to relax in the beautiful
sun and Caribbean green waters in December. All
the info is on the website. Also check the April
newsletter for details on the conferences.
A reminder: if you are thinking of the conference
in December in the Bahamas, be sure to sign up early
and check with Diane Cosgrove at Altour Travel for plane tix.
If you are interested in what happens during one of
the conferences, look at the website (www.demello.org)
or at the February 2005 news letter.
In 2007 we are planning a DeMello conference in honor
of Tony’s 20th anniversary (he died in 1987). Where
it will be and who will be coming will be announced
on this website when it is finalized. You can be sure
it will be special.
I leave for California May 13 and will return mid-June.
You can leave messages on my office phone for any Center
related matter (718 817 4508). My assistant Gloria Messemer
comes in every Monday and will answer your questions.
If is personal and private, you can leave a message on
my private phone 718 817 5378. I access those messages
every day. Use this number only if it is private, personal,
or very urgent. Being on the west coast, I may not be able
to do much, but I will try.
J. Francis Stroud, S.J. Director
April 2005
Thanks to very wonderful friends I will be able to update you monthly
on the activities of the DeMello Spirituality Center. The first
new addition is the possibility of using credit cards to purchase books,
tapes and videos from our Center (this procedure is through PayPal)
with the use of your credit card. If you have any questions,
either write or email the Center (stroud@fordham.edu).
You will see the updated conference dates on the web page.
If you need further contact information just ask and we
will update that information. One recent change is that
the conference in Malibu CA, May 13-15 has been postponed.
However, the program in Burlingame is still in place.
Some personal items; I have been in Nassau Bahamas giving
Lenten missions and have assisted the pastor for the Holy
Week and Easter Services. The pastor of the New Providence
Community Church in Nassau visited Fordham University
February 27, 2005. at the invitation of the DeMello Center
and had very productive talks with the Dean of
Fordham University Graduate School of Religion and Religious
Education. Following in the ecumenical footsteps of Pope
John II, a very exciting collaboration is taking place between
the Catholic Church and the new Protestant Church. We will
keep you informed in these pages.
Our Conference team, Fr. J. Francis Stroud, S.J., Jonathan
Galente and Joan Bud….is preparing itself for our conferences
in May, June, November and December.
If you wish to enhance your spiritual life in the warm breezes
of the Bahamas in December, give some thought to our conference
at that time. December is at the height of the tourist season.
Hotel costs are very high (two to three hundred dollars a night)
but we have a special price (less than $100 a night) at a
beautiful resort right near the conference center.
Give yourself and your spouse a break! Be advised,
however, to make reservations early. If you wait until
October you may not be able to get a flight.
To simplify matters for flight arrangements,
call Diane Cosgrove at Altour Travel (1-800-277-1244,
extension 235) Diane will be more than gracious
in handling your flight arrangements to the Bahamas
or for that matter to any of our conferences.
I am now back at Fordham and will be here till I leave for
California in Mid-May. If you would like to contact me,
please either call my office or leave an email message
on my office computer stroud@fordham.edu.

Febr. 2005
Rev.J. Francis Stroud, S.J., the executive director of the
DeMello Spirituality Center (legal title: The Center for Spiritual Exchange)
finished his eigth year of teaching at Loyola Marymount University in
Los Angeles in May 2003. His course consists of applying the spiritual
principles of Anthony DeMello, S.J. to the students’experiences of film
and television.
A number of Hollywood personalities made guest appearances and talked
to the students, including Guiliana Santini, star of TV’s "Home Front",
Carmen Finestra, President of Wind Dancer Studios ("What Women Want"
starring Mel Gibson), executive producer and writer of the TV series
"Home Improvement" with Tim Allen, Norman Lear (producer of more
than 20 Television series), Jim Byrnes (screenwriter for Walker Texas Ranger) et.al.
All were well received and gave the students inspiring presentations.
DESCRIPTION OF
A DEMELLO SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE
Tony deMello, S.J., a spiritual guide himself, insisted that spirituality
is the most practical thing in the world. To experience the happiness that
belongs to you and which surrounds you daily; to eliminate unwanted
suffering from your lives; to understand the most basic of all life's
questions: "Who am I?"; these couldn't be more practical. And these are what
a DeMello Spirituality Conference is all about.
Based on Tony deMello's insightful approach to spirituality, Fr.J.Francis
Stroud, S.J. presents these themes, using Tony's storytelling approach and
humor to make the points easy to understand and enjoyable to hear.
Jonathan Galente integrates the above themes into one's life by offering
exercises derived from neuro linguistic programming and elsewhere.
Joan Budilovsky begins and ends the day with marvelous yoga exercises
that stimulate your energy for the day and relax you for a restful sleep
at night. She also offers easy to learn massage techniques. All the
exercises are infused with her warm and beautiful personality.
One of the most desired results of a spirituality conference is learning
a method of prayer and meditation that can be practiced without pain
or distraction. Along with the traditional forms found in deMello's
masterpiece on prayer, "Sadhana", another method will be offered that has
helped thousands of contemporary meditators.
Bring comfortable clothes, an open mind and a willing heart to the conference,
and you will experience a weekend that can transform your life.
